This <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyclone_Ianos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cyclone<\/a>, named &#8220;Ianos&#8221;, is the latest of a long list of low pressure systems that usually build in autumn when masses of cold air circulate over the summer-heated Mediterranean Sea. While violent storms are not that rare, their intensity and frequency are likely to increase with the warming of global temperatures.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/20200917-Medicane.jpg\" rel=\"\" data-lightbox=\"179203599\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4725\" src=\"http:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/20200917-Medicane.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/20200917-Medicane.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/20200917-Medicane-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/20200917-Medicane-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>This particular meteorological event in the Mediterranean bears the name of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/content\/noaa-20-spots-rare-mediterranean-hurricane-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">medicane<\/a>\u201d (contraction of \u201cMediterranean\u201d and \u201churricane\u201d) because it has the particularity of generating a characteristic cyclonic eye with winds that can reach 100 km\/h. Coupled with torrential rains, these medicanes wreck havoc wherever they make landfall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/outside-site-3-medicane-ianos-cyclone-scaled.jpg\" rel=\"\" data-lightbox=\"179203599\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4715\" src=\"http:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/outside-site-3-medicane-ianos-cyclone-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/outside-site-3-medicane-ianos-cyclone-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/outside-site-3-medicane-ianos-cyclone-1920x1080.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/outside-site-3-medicane-ianos-cyclone-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/outside-site-3-medicane-ianos-cyclone-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIanos\u201d peaked at 112 km\/h in an area where four of our <a href=\"https:\/\/octopusfoundation.org\/en\/open-source-diy-monitor-coastal-species\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open source monk seal monitoring kits<\/a> happen to be deployed. Our autonomous system is composed of an indoor camera that monitors seal activity in a marine cave, and an outside camera used to document the current weather.<\/p>\n<p>With \u201cIanos\u201d, we were able to test the resistance of our prototypes. The result is surprising, to say the least, since none of the four sets suffered permanent damage.
